EDB sells solution for international smart cards to EDT

(Oslo, 01.09.03) EDB Business Partner has signed a contract with EDT for software and operating services to allow the use of international smart cards in EDT's ATM network. The agreement runs for three years and has a contractual value of NOK 16 million.

EDT upgrades their ATM network to accept smart cards according to national and international standards as part of the commitment to reducing card fraud. EDB Bank & Finance will supply the software element of the order, comprising solutions for EDT's network of ATMs, as well as a system to receive transaction information from the ATMs. The solutions to be delivered meet all the requirements of both the Norwegian Banking Standardisation Bureau (BSK) and the international EMV standard for secure smart cards. Operating services will be supplied by EDB Teamco.

EMV is an international standard for smart cards (chip cards) developed by Eurocard, MasterCard and Visa in order to reduce card fraud and misuse. Eurocard and Visa aim to eventually replace all Visa- and MasterCard cards with EMV cards, and all minibank ATMs must be ready to accept the new cards by 1 January 2005.

EDT manages ATMs on behalf of their customers, mostly within the banking and department store sectors.
"These solutions will modernise EDT's ATM network in order to meet both current and future security standards", comments Helge Birkeland, Management Director of EDT Norge AS.

"Adapting our systems for the EMV standard represents an important element in the development of the international payment systems we offer. By developing systems components to incorporate new international standards we can help our customers implement more automated and efficient payment services", comments Ole Urdahl, Executive Vice President, EDB Bank & Finance.
