The Forest Company announces FSC certification for Colombian plantations
St Peter Port, Guernsey, Thursday March 22nd, 2012 - The Forest Company Limited, a closed-ended investment company, incorporated and registered in Guernsey, announces FSC certification for their Colombian plantations.
The Forest Company seeks certification by the Forest Stewardship Council ("FSC"), or like, for all projects. FSC certification is an independent third party verification that the management of the forest plantations is carried out according to the highest sustainable practices, including environmental, social and economic aspects. The FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established in 1993 in response to global concerns regarding deforestation. Companies wanting to obtain FSC certification have to show that they comply with the Principles and Criteria adopted by the General Assembly of the FSC. This is done through an independent annual audit carried out by accredited auditing bodies.
The Forest Company acquired the Colombian plantation company, Reforestadora El Guasimo, in December 2010. Since then management have worked to ensure the FSC criteria are met and the audit passed. The Forest Company has also received FSC certification for the Ibiracu project in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In June 2011 the Ibiracu project received an award from the municipality of Buritizeiro, Minas Gerais, Brazil for work in the conservation, recuperation and preservation of biodiversity. The award sighted the generation of numerous direct and indirect jobs and the conservation, preservation and recuperation of the creeks and surrounding ecosystems that are vital to maintaining water inflow to the Sao Francisco river. The Sao Francisco river is the fourth longest in South America spanning 2,914 kilometres.
