(August 23, 2001) - Wholesale subsidiary Wein Wolf expands product range with renowned Australian products
Hamburg, 23 August 2001. The wine trading group Hawesko Holding AG (HAWG.F, 604270) announced today that its subsidiary Wein Wolf Import has gained the Australian wine producer Penfolds as a supplier. Wein Wolf will be the exclusive distributor of Penfolds wines in Germany; the alliance is expected to be effective from 1 January 2002.
Penfolds can look back on 150 years of tradition, and today has vineyards in choice Australian locations such as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, on a total of 500 hectares. The assortment includes world-famous premium labels such as "Penfolds Grange" and "Penfolds Adelaide Hills", which have won numerous awards.
The wines of the fifth continent are achieving double-digit sales growth in Germany. In March 2001 they achieved a market share of more than 1% for the first time. "In the future, we intend to continue developing the Australian wines particularly at the upper end of the range", said Guido Siebdrat, the responsible managing director for marketing at Wein Wolf, "and we expect sales development in line with the strong overall growth of the Australian segment in the German market. We are very proud of the fact that Penfolds has entrusted us with the proper positioning of its valuable wines in Germany."
Hawesko Holding AG is the leading seller of premium wines and champagnes in Germany. Through its three distribution channels - mail order/e-commerce (particularly Hanseatisches Wein- und Sekt-Kontor), stationary specialist retail (Jacques' Wein-Depot) and wholesale (Wein Wolf and CWD Champagner- und Wein-Distributionsgesellschaft) - the Group achieved sales of DM 454 million in 2000. Hawesko employs a yearly average 515 staff members.
