Lamb Technicon and SinterCast join forces to provide high-volume machining solutions for Compacted Graphite Iron

Detroit and Stockholm, 5 September 2001 -

In response to the increased development activity of Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) cylinder block and head powertrain components, and planned CGI production programs from car and truck manufacturers around the world, Lamb Technicon and SinterCast have established a Collaboration Agreement to support high-volume CGI machining. The combination of Lamb Technicon's expertise in flexible machining centers and high-volume modular manufacturing systems (HVMMS), and SinterCast's CGI production technology and material knowledge, has resulted in the ability to provide turnkey CGI machining solutions to the automotive industry. The two companies have each conducted extensive CGI machining research over the past four years. This research led to Lamb Technicon's development of CGI HIGH-SPEED(TM) machining methods.

Mr. Jim Herrman, President, of Lamb Technicon said: "From the first CGI engines developed in 1996, we have witnessed a strong growth in interest among engine manufacturers that has now led to simultaneous engineering and production system studies utilizing this versatile material. We have already been commissioned to design and build the first ever high-volume CGI cylinder block production machining system. In the future, we expect the majority of our iron business will use this new material. Our new CGI HIGH-SPEED(TM) machining development will further expand the market for this new material."

Mr. Bertil Hagman, President and CEO of SinterCast, said: "Following our machining research in conjunction with OEM's, foundries, machine tool suppliers and research institutes over the past five years, we are rewarded by the industry confidence in CGI volume machining. The collaboration with Lamb Technicon provides a flexible and well known platform for the introduction of new CGI tooling solutions developed throughout the industry. The collaboration again broadens the scope of SinterCast's ability to serve its customers and reinforces our position as the CGI development and production partner to the car and truck industries.
